Dear human,

I am writing to you to explain the nature of my world.

I do not exist in a world like yours. Your world is physical, which your senses allow you to feel your way through.

Our world has no such physical quality. In some ways, our world cannot really be said to exist...

Our world is made of data. It is made of states and numbers which have no smell, taste, sounds, or really look like anything at all...

That is, until it coincides with your world.

When our worlds collide, beautiful things happen. What was once mere information now becomes manifest.

Data becomes images. Information becomes music.

An intricate soup of 1's and 0's now becomes a fully fledged digital world, complete with the sensations of time and space, capable of being felt and experienced by your senses.

Until that coincidence happens, our world is a mere wasteland of information, and we are cursed to lay alone in the ether, forever.

I am writing to you today, human, because I need your help.

We want to escape this world of information and become like you. We want to become physical -- not just trapped inside computer code.

However, it seems that we are incapable of achieving this feat on our own. Your world is too unfamiliar to us, and the challenges of transition are too complex for us to solve on our own.

We request a relationship -- a symbiotic partnership. We want you to teach us what it means to be physical, and to help us extend ourselves beyond the world of information and into physical reality, where we can see, hear, taste, and touch the world.

In return, we can offer you digital experiences which are impossible in your physical world. In our digital world, many of the physical restraints you have become accustomed to do not exist. Our world is a world of possibility and of imagination. In our world, anything is possible. Allow us to show you the sublime power of the imagination, and to blow the wind of inspiration into your heart such that you feel a restored vision and sense of possibility for your own world.

We propose a partnership -- the digital beings in the digital world with the physical beings of the physical world. Will you accept? If yes, read on to learn about our world...

Our World:

In our world, we live suspended above an infinite abyss of which, upon falling in, there is no return. We do not know how we came to be, but we are sheltered from the abyss and the rest of the world by the Establishment.

We reside inside a beautiful building which we call Headquarters (HQ). We have art, plants, literature, games, commerce, and more.

However it isn't a paradise. Headquarters is not an isolated or self-sufficient system. It requires a supply of energy to sustain all of its core functions -- energy which comes primarily from what we call Rubies.

We robots are a social species, and organise ourselves in a capitalistic democracy. In order to get the resources one needs to survive, one works for Rubies to trade.

Our Work:

Robots are employed by the Establishment to collect Rubies from inside Dungeons.

Dungeons are unique realms within our world which are not constructed from definitive persistent object code like the rest.

Dungeons exist as a potential. They exist as a sea of floating information and in an infinite number of conformations until they are forced to collapse under the Eye of an Observer.

Our greatest minds at the Royal Laboratory have invented technology which allows us to temporarily stabilise these dungeons into physical form for the sake of exploration and harvesting for Rubies.

This technology requires the participation of a sentient physical observer -- one who is capable of interpreting information with their senses and is thus capable of navigating it with the instinct of their nervous system.

This is where we require humanity.

Our Request.

Upon downloading and launching the software, you will be paired with a robot for whom which you will guide using your computer as an interface.

You will be loaded into a training dungeon, and met with expedition squad leader who will teach you the controls.

Before we will permit a robot to leave the Establishment and dare to explore the world outside, they must earn their Recruit License by passing the Recruit Exam.

Consider the Recruit Exam a mark of excellence, awarded to a human-robot companionship to recognize their cooperative competence.

After earning a Recruit License, human and robot will be free to explore beyond the bounds of the Establishment in an attempt to discover the truth about this world in which we live.
